        HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Is it just me, or does September and the end of summer feel like the real  New Year? A hangover from school days, no doubt, when I looked forward to starting in a new class with a set of shiny new crayons (and ever increasing homework!)

I always think September is a great time to make those New Year resolutions; to start building your health and immune system ready for the dark chilly winter days ahead; and think how smug you will be when, come December, whilst everyone else is talking about resolutions for 2014 you will have hit your targets, fitted back into your party outfits and will be ahead of the game!

        Back to SchoolBACK TO SCHOOL

Are you giving your child the best possible start to their day? A survey of primary school children by the Natural Hydration Council this week reported that ¼ children do not have a drink with breakfast and around two thirds don’t drink anything until lunchtime, leaving them at risk of severe dehydration.

This Month my blog explains why a good breakfast is so vital for children to give them the best chance of behaving well, concentrating and therefore learning effectively at school. After all, if you put poor quality fuel in your car it is likely to splutter to a halt! Click here to read more.

SEPTEMBER CONSULTATION DATES—Why not book an Autumn ‘MOT’

Time for a catch up? If I haven’t seen you for a while, why not book in for an ‘MOT’ health check before the winter sets in. My next appointment slots are on:

Saturday 14th September & Friday 27th September at Radius Healthcare, Sussex County Cricket Club, Eaton Road, Hove.

Did you know that teachers, health and social workers struggle with the highest stress levels amongst our workforce, and that around 1 in 5 workers call in sick as a result of stress? To the right is a poster with details of our Stress Management seminar on Tuesday 17 September. Please help spread the word! If you have an office, school notice board or premises where you might be able to display it, I would be so grateful if you could print it off and pin it up; or please forward to anyone else who you think might be interested in coming along.

LAUNCH OF BRIGHTON & HOVE WELLBEING CLUB                                                                                                               Many of you who have been part of my weight management programmes have talked about how good it would be to keep in touch with each other and meet up from time to time; so here we are!

The Brighton & Hove Wellbeing Club will launch on Tuesday the 17th September (1830 – 2030 at the Brighton Consulting Rooms, Preston Park) but then run on the second Thursday of the month offering a drop-in to chat about all things to do with nutrition, health & wellbeing. We will start by offering the seminar (above) exploring how to deal with stress, but for future events will be open to your suggestions; so come along and help us form a fun and interactive club for anyone interested in all things health. It’s only £10, so great value! To book the first one click on the Brighton & Hove Wellbeing by the sea tab here.

The new Brighton & Hove Weight Management group starts on 1 October and runs for 6 consecutive Tuesdays until 5 November. Click here for more details.

MENU OF THE MONTH: 4 INGREDIENTS BIRCHER MUESLI

Served place setting: Hot morning porridge and eggs on white bac

Two busy Australian mums have written some fantastic cookbooks based on the simple and utterly sensible premise of using just four ingredients. So, to stick with the healthy breakfast theme, try this brilliant but simple Bircher Muesli recipe:

INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup (110g) natural muesli; 1/4 cup (75ml) orange juice, 2tbs natural yoghurt, 1 green apple, grated.

TO MAKE; Soak the muesli in the juice for 15 minutes. Mix in the remaining ingredients and serve. (You can add fresh berries for extra goodness). Delicious!
